U.S adult-use Cannabis sales increase in July

2024-09-02

July serves as a month of celebration for Independence Day in the United States and, notably, for cannabis sales. Most states with regulated adult-use cannabis markets reported an uptick in sales during this period. The leading states in terms of sales remain California and Michigan.

Although California's performance was not as robust compared to other months, total sales reached $386 million, with adult-use sales comprising $367 million. This marks a slight increase from June's total of $385 million and adult-use sales of $366 million.

Statistically speaking, however, it represents California's lowest July on record, significantly below the $418 million achieved in 2020—a figure that may have been influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic as many other states experienced similar trends at that time.

With $2.75 billion in sales so far this year, California remains the nation's largest cannabis market. March was California's strongest month of the year, with total sales of $408 million.

Michigan held on to second place, with July sales of $288 million, of which $286 million came from the adult market. That's up from June's total sales of $279 million, almost all of which came from adult sales.

Like California, Michigan's July sales were similarly lower than March's $289 million, but not by much. Cannabis sales in Michigan have reached $2 billion so far this year.

Illinois took the No. 3 spot, with industry intelligence estimating the state's total sales in July at $166 million. That's up from the $165 million officially announced in June, according to Illinois cannabis regulatory oversight officials. In early July, Illinois also celebrated its entry into the billion-dollar sales club.
